From: Beethoven Festival

The Music Program of the University at Albany’s Department of Music and Theatre is pleased to present a Beethoven Festival will take place at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center on the uptown campus. The festival kicks off with a concert on Wednesday, September 11 at 7pm with the Capital Trio performing Ghost” Trio Op. 70 No. 1 and Cello and Piano Sonatas Op. 69 and Op. 102 No. 1.

“I was only a year old for Beethoven’s 200th birthday,” shares festival organizer Duncan Cumming, “and when his 300th rolls around - well, let’s just say I thought I had better celebrate the 250th.”  About the planning of the festival, he adds, “An obvious celebration of Beethoven would include the nine symphonies or the 32 piano sonatas but we decided to pull in area colleagues and focus largely on chamber music.”  With one concert each month of the academic year, the festival’s performers include faculty, guests, students and even young performers.  “We are so honored by Beethoven, to be able to perform the works he’s left for us, and we’re very grateful to so many from the Capital Region for their participation.”

The Capital Trio began as the Cecilia Piano Trio in 1997. They have been chamber ensemble in residence at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center since 2008.  Pianist Duncan Cumming, violinist Hilary Cumming and cellist Åžölen Dikener have performed together throughout the United States and in Europe.  Their recording A Book of Hours, music of William Matthews, was released on Albany Records in 2010 (TROY 1239), and their second recording for Albany Records, music of David Walther, came out in 2013 (TROY 1428).
