Court Rules Against Beverly Hills in Housing Element Case

A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge ruled on September 11th that the City of Beverly Hills has not been able to fulfill its legal responsibility to meet the state's ambitious housing goals. Californians for Homeownership (CFH), a nonprofit organization sponsored by the California Association of Realtors, brought the lawsuit.

The City of Beverly Hills, like all other cities in California, is required to submit a housing element plan to the California Department of Housing & Community Development (HCD) outlining how it will create capacity for a state mandated number of new housing units by 2029.

The City of Beverly Hills under the ruling will not have to work in the coming years to abide by the state’s housing mandate. To read more, click here.

Newsom and Bass: 'Grateful' for Breakthrough on Hollywood Strike

A tentative contract agreement was reached between the top entertainment studios and the union representing screenwriters on Sunday, September 24, ending the 146-day walkout that exposed deep divisions over income inequality and rapid technological advancement. The agreement comes as a welcome relief to the Californian economy, which has been impacted by the loss of television and film production in recent months.

Now, attention is focused on the much larger actors' union, which went on strike in July and placed its own negotiations on hold while it waited for a deal from the writers. To read more, click here.

City of Los Angeles Revokes Approval For Bulgari Resort

On September 6th, the Los Angeles City Council directed the city's planning director to revoke the approval for the Bulgari Resort in Benedict Canyon. The proposed 58-room luxury resort located at 9704-9712 West Oak Road received the green light from the city’s Planning Commission in 2017. However, Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky, whose fifth district includes the project site, who led the charge with multiple opposition groups to unravel approval citing concerns about the hotel’s environmental impact.

As a consequence of the decision, Bulgari is now another major luxury development referendum near Beverly Hills and in the Santa Monica mountains that has been defeated. With limited development space available in Los Angeles County, it remains unclear how businesses can grow in Los Angeles. To read more, click here.

Gov. Gavin Newsom chooses Laphonza Butler to Fill Dianne Feinstein's Senate seat

On Friday, September 29th, Democratic Senator Diane Feinstein passed away. Having dedicated 31 years of her life to serving as a United States Senator, her passing has left a large void in American politics. Senator Feinstein's term expires at the end of 2024, and Governor Newsome had to find a replacement to fill her seat.

Governor Newsome selected Laphonza Butler, president of EMILY's List, to fill the seat late on October 1st. She will become the third Black woman to serve in the Senate, as well as the first openly LGBTQ person to represent California in the chamber. To read more, click here.
