Online Program: War in Ukraine
Thursday, Oct. 13, 6:30pm
Join Crystal H. Brown, Assistant Professor of Political Science in the Social Science and Policy Studies Department at WPI, for an examination of Russia’s war on Ukraine. Dr. Brown will discuss the complex relationship between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States by highlighting what the war in Ukraine means for international politics and state sovereignty. Ukraine is vital to Russia because it is a transit country for energy from Russia to Europe. As China rises to power, Russia could be surrounded by powerful China to the East and the US-backed NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) to the West—two major world powers. As Ukraine pivots to join the EU and thus NATO, Russia has become more insecure as “enemies” could be at its border and potentially control its energy supply to Europe. Vladimir Putin’s goal is to secure Russia’s border against NATO and re-establish its role as a world superpower. The complexities facing the world today are an offshoot of Cold War politics that are re-merging with transitions in power dynamics in international relations. This program is online only; registration required.
