Friday Morning Bird Walk

Description: Enjoy a guided walk, sharpen your birding skills, and help track migrating and resident birds for Mass Audubon. We’ll explore different trails and habitats at the sanctuary each week as the birds change through the season. Description: Join us for a hands-on nature program designed especially for five, six, and seven year olds. Each month we’ll focus on a new nature topic. Each session we will explore a new, seasonal nature topic through hands-on investigations, crafts, activities and short hikes in Broad Meadow Brook's beautiful 430-acre wildlife sanctuary.These classes will provide in-depth learning in a supportive social environment. What is the habitat of a fox, where does it raise its young, what does it eat, and who wants to eat it?For ages 8 to 12. Homeschool Programs for Teens at Broad Meadow Brook–Aquatic Insects & Water Quality

Description: Rivers and streams are alive with the larvae of insects all year round! In fact these critters are very active in winter because of the abundance of food (dead leaves) and oxygen (from cold water). Did you know you can estimate the impacts of pollution at a site by counting the number of species present in a stretch of river? Come to learn this technique and discuss sources of pollution in Worcester, while experiencing the hidden ecosystem underwater. The instructor will sample the river for insects and provide small spoons, trays, and identification guides. Those who want to bring waders or hip boots may.For ages 12-16. Description: As soon as our vernal pools and wetlands thaw, they come alive with the excited sounds and movements of frogs, salamanders, and insects. Ever wonder what they are calling about at night, or how to identify specific calls of wood frogs, spring peepers, and chorus frogs? Then this is the class for you. On this night hike, we will learn about frog calls, salamander coloration, and how different species are active at different times throughout spring. The instructor may even get the chance to call in a barred owl! Bring a flashlight or headlamp, and dress for the weather. For ages 12 to 16.For more information and to register, call 508.753.6087.

Description: How fast is the water flowing in Broad Meadow Brook? What makes moving water a better habitat for some species? Let's look for evidence of fast and slow-moving water and learn how to read a stream. We will measure stream width and depth and use a ping-pong ball, measuring tape, and stopwatch to determine the speed of the water.For ages 8-12.
