Call for Designs: PDSD Launches Casita Model Plan Competition

Government and Politics

July 27, 2023

From: City Of Tucson

The City of Tucson Planning and Development Services (PDSD) seeks creative designs for casitas in Tucson.

The Casita Model Plan design competition aims to inspire innovative ideas and solutions for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), or casitas, with up to 10 selected entries, each receiving a generous $1,000 prize funded by AARP.

The primary goal of the Design Competition is to curate a collection of Casita Pre-approved Model Plans. The City invites professionals, including architects, engineers, designers, builders, contractors, design-build teams, and students, to submit innovative designs that highlight the numerous benefits of ADUs.

In addition to the cash prize, the selected model plans will have their permit fees for review and approval as a model plan waived. The selected Casita Model Plans will be showcased in an online gallery on the Casitas in Tucson website. Homeowners can explore the gallery, choose a design that suits their needs, and then collaborate with the respective designer to acquire the plans and secure the necessary permits for constructing the casita on their property.

PDSD will provide further details during a virtual information session on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at 9 a.m. The session will cover the submission process, design criteria, and other pertinent details related to the ADU Design Competition. Individuals interested in learning more are encouraged to register for the Zoom session.

The ADU Design Competition submission deadline is Monday, September 18, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. Take advantage of this incredible opportunity to contribute to Tucson's housing innovation and positively impact the community.

PDSD was awarded the AARP 2023 Community Challenge grant in June to launch an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Design Competition. The grant represents a significant milestone in Tucson's commitment to affordable housing and livability. After approving a zoning change to allow ADUs in Tucson over a year ago, Mayor and Council, in collaboration with PDSD, recognized the opportunity to enhance further efforts in promoting casitas as an inclusive and adaptable housing option for the community. The AARP Community Challenge grant will bolster ADUs and specifically address the housing needs of older adults and multigenerational families. The American Institute of Architects Southern Arizona chapter is also a partner in supporting this competition.
