Water Distribution Technician II:       Grade 14     Base Hourly:  $21.30/hr.--$32.41/hr.         Base Annual:  $44,299.13--$67,406.36

Job Summary:  This position participates in the construction and maintenance of the city’s water distribution system.  An incumbent in this position may be designated “Water Distribution Worker” or “Water Distribution Technician II.” 

Major Duties:   Inspects contractor installed water mains, valves, fire hydrants, and services.   Locates, marks, and documents valves; maintains valve boxes and fire hydrants.  Installs taps for new service meters, fire hydrants, and main extensions.   Constructs new and/or replacement water mains; repairs broken or damaged water mains.  Installs water lines and ensure the watertight connection of all fittings and appurtenances.  Replaces defective meters and backflow prevention devices.  Flushes pipes to replace stagnant water and remove sediments.   Tests and operates valves and hydrants to ensure proper function and setting.  Documents all work through detailed maps and materials reports.   Completes materials requisition for all parts and supplies.  Maintains assigned equipment; checks fluid levels, belts, hoses, etc.; performs routine safety checks.  Performs related duties. 

Minimum Qualifications:  18 year or older.  High School Diploma, GED and/or equivalent work experience.  Valid Alabama Driver’s license.  Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid CDL issued by the State of Alabama.  Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work.  Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain Grade I water distribution system operator certification.  

Knowledge Required By The Position:   Knowledge of federal and state regulatory requirements and industrial standards for water treatment and distribution.  Knowledge of work safety principles and practices, including relevant OSHA regulations.  Knowledge of water distribution equipment operation, repair, and maintenance principles.   Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures.  Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.  Skill in interpreting maps, as-built records, construction plans, and other related documents.  Skill in problem solving.  Skill in prioritizing and planning.  Skill in interpersonal relations.  Skill in oral and written communication. 

Complexity/Scope Of Work:   The work consists of related technical duties. Working in heavy traffic and inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.  The purpose of this position is to participate in the construction and maintenance of the city’s water distribution system. Successful performance helps ensure the effective and efficient operation of the department and the successful provision of potable water to customers. 

Physical Demands/ Work Environment:  The work is typically performed intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.  The work is typically performed in an office, at other department facilities, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.  The employee is exposed to noise, dirt, dust, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.  Physical strength, ability, and mobility to perform all essential job functions with or without accommodation.   Must be willing to work overtime, non-standard work hours, holidays, shifts, and weekends as necessary.  Must be willing to be on-call.
