JOB SUMMARY:Apprentice:  Assists in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical system lines, substations, and other components as an Apprentice Lineman.  

Lineman:Participates in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical system lines, substations, and other components.

MAJOR DUTIES:    

Apprentice:Completes TVPPA apprentice program requirements.  Assists or completes tasks under the supervision of a Lineman as part of a crew engaged in the construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of substations, transmission lines, underground and overhead primary distribution and secondary electrical lines, transformers, and poles.  Monitors work area to ensure the safety of other crewmembers, the public, and equipment and other property.  Gathers materials and equipment as directed by work orders and engineer’s drawings for the construction and/or installation of improvements and changes to the electric system.  Stocks trucks for daily activities.  Responds to emergency weather and other events; assists with power outage restorations as needed.  Flags traffic at work sites.  Performs related duties.

Lineman:Participates in the work of a crew engaged in the construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of high voltage electrical systems, including substations, transmission lines, underground and overhead primary distribution and secondary electrical lines, transformers, and poles.  Establishes safe work zone and job sites; monitors work area to ensure the safety of other crewmembers, the public, and equipment and other property.  Performs hot pole change-outs.  Recon ducts single- and three-phase lines.  Repairs and maintains streetlights.  Installs transformers, capacitors, and regulators.  Climbs poles to perform job duties required; work from an elevate bucket truck.  Provides information and assistance to customers.  Responds to emergency weather and other events and participates in power outage restoration activities.  Performs related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Both positions:  18 year or older.  HS Diploma, GED and/or equivalent work experience.  Valid Alabama Driver’s license.  Possession of or ability to obtain CDL.  Sufficient experience associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having held a similar position for one to two years.  

Lineman:Sufficient experience associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having held a similar position for four years.  Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class A CDL.  TVPPA Journeyman Lineman certification required.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:Knowledge of electrical theory and principles.  Knowledge of work hazards and safety guidelines.  Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. Computer literate.  Skill in reading and understanding blueprints.  Skill in learning to operate a variety of job-related tools and equipment, including bucket trucks, digger derricks, etc.  Skill in problem solving, prioritizing, and planning.  Skill in interpersonal relations.  Skill in oral and written communication.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:Work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. Ability to lift light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell and hearing.  Work is typically performed outdoors in all types of weather.    Exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and electrical hazards, and enclosed spaces. Physical strength, ability, and mobility to perform all essential job functions with or without accommodation.  Must be willing to work overtime, non-standard work hours, holidays, shifts, and weekends as necessary.  Must be willing to be on-call.
