Skate Park Re-Opening Celebration

After nearly a year of undergoing major renovations and upgrades, the Skate Park at Arovista is re-opening next week! The community is invited to attend the re-opening celebration on Saturday, September 10. The event will commence with a safety clinic, from 8:30 – 9:00 a.m., followed by a ribbon cutting at 9:00 a.m. The family-friendly celebration will have skate    demos, giveaways from Vans, refreshments, and feature local vendors, such as Tillys, The County, and Identity Boardshop.

The renovation impacted every element of the Skate Park. New skate elements were added, maintenance repairs were made, and concrete and drainage work was done. An ADA ramp was installed, along with stairs, railings, and retaining walls. The Skate Park renovation was a multi-year process that included design consultants, extensive outreach efforts, and the involvement of multiple City departments. The final concept plan for the park incorporated the community feedback received. The City is excited to re-open this great community amenity!

Cooling Centers Open due to Excessive Heat Warning

With extreme temperatures expected throughout the Labor Day weekend, the City of Brea has activated its Cooling Center by extending hours at the Brea Community Center, located at 695 Madison Way. The Brea Community Center is open Thursday and Friday, from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. These extended hours offer residents the opportunity to stay cool and out of the heat. The Brea Mall is also a great place to visit to cool off. On days with high temperatures, remember to stay hydrated, avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, wear lightweight clothing, and avoid unnecessary outside work or activities. Check on friends, family, and neighbors, especially those at higher risk for heat-related illness.

Community Came Together for Brea Fest

The City’s 34th Annual Brea Fest was a success! Held on Friday, August 12, over 6,000 attendees, 19 area restaurants, and craft vendors came together for the return of a community favorite. The arts were also a spotlight for the evening as the Brea Art Gallery and the Curtis Theatre showcased art projects, demonstrations, and live performances. Thanks to the generosity of local restaurants, numerous volunteers, and City staff who helped make this an amazing event for the entire community.

Brea Fest is truly an event the community looks forward to each year. Longtime residents, Gary and Crystal Eychaner, are still enjoying Brea's "tastiest celebration of the year" 32 years later. The 40-year Brea residents recreated this memory, which featured the couple on the cover of the Brea Line in 1990 attending Brea Fest. To Gary and Crystal, Brea is more than just a community, it's family. Their four children and five grandchildren keep them actively involved in Brea events. They love seeing Brea get better and better over the years while still maintaining its small-town feel.

September is National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month (NPM) is recognized each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. The theme for 2022 is: “A Lasting Legacy”. Each week this month, the campaign will focus on a different aspect of preparedness for individuals, families, and communities. Use this month to make a plan, build a kit, prepare for disasters, and teach youth about preparedness. Visit ready.gov for tips on how to prepare for a disaster.

Inner Coastal Clean-Up Day

On Saturday, September 17, from 7:00 -11:00 a.m., the City’s Public Works Department will be holding its 19th Annual Inner Coastal Cleanup event. The event will take place at the Brea Creek Channel, located at the lower level of the downtown parking structure at the end of Birch Street. This is a popular event that attracts hundreds of volunteers each year to help create a healthier watershed. Please join City of Brea representatives and volunteers by removing trash from Brea Creek and the adjacent slopes. For additional details, please visit cityofbrea.net.

Doing Our Part to Conserve Water

The City of Brea is doing its part to conserve water during this extreme drought season. The Public Works Department has adjusted our watering system to only water functional turf (an area of turf grass or lawn that is used regularly for recreational purposes), sports fields, and trees. All other areas throughout the City will no longer be watered.

We would like to remind residents that watering is currently limited to three days per week: Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday from May to September. Starting in October to April, the watering schedule changes to one day a week, Wednesday. Make water conservation a way of life and together, we can make a difference.
