Blood Drive at City Hall  Aug. 18

There’s no substitute for blood. When a patient receives blood, it was given in advance by a generous donor.Every day, blood donors help patients of all ages: accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those battling cancer. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. Here are just a few of their stories. Please register now to give blood at City Hall 44 North Lorimier Street Aug. 18 from  11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donors get a $10 e-gift card of choice and chance at gas for a year a $6K value! rcblood.org/fuel Click/tap the link below to register or find other blood drives and information.

Keep Trash in the Cart

Overflowing trash cans can spill when they are picked up by us and sometimes before we can even get there. In addition, overweight cars can damage equipment.

Police News Recap

- This week's NEIGHBORHOOD ROLL CALL is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 18th with "D Platoon" at Peach & Fairlane beginning at 7:00 p.m.
- Robbery Suspect Apprehended - On Sunday, July 3, 2022, officers responded to the Marco’s Pizza for a reported armed robbery. The suspect brandished a firearm and stole cash from the business. After a thorough investigation, including assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies in the region, the suspect, Joseph P. Walker II, was taken into custody on August 3, 2022 in Wayne County, Missouri on charges unrelated to this robbery.
- The recent rise in private home camera systems is helpful and we recommend people register their camera systems with our department, so that we know exactly where cameras are if an incident occurs in a certain area.
- The ShotSpotter system has directly attributed to 8 arrests as well as the confiscation of 3 firearms. Of 60 ShotSpotter activations, 46 of them did not have any 911 calls reporting the shots, so it is delivering on its promise to give us a more accurate picture of the situation in our city.
- On top of ShotSpotter, our officers continue proactive and diligent street patrols. Just last week, our PD made two arrests for subjects illegally firing weapons in the city and recovered a stolen firearm, neither case involved the use of ShotSpotter. Technology is useful but is not the total and only solution. Quality, boots-on-the-ground police work is still necessary, and our officers excel at it.

2022 State of the City - Mayor Kinder

When we discuss the state of things today in Cape Girardeau, that conversation encompasses a lot of issues. Some of those fall under the city’s mantle of responsibility, some of those are private business issues, and some are cultural issues that fall under the responsibility of us all. Regardless, we are focusing on the quality of life that we as a community expect, not only for ourselves but also for those who are not an active part of the process. Major issues like infrastructure, public safety, and the local economy impact a large part of all this. Read more on our website.

Recycle Right! Trash the Plastic Bags

Plastic shopping bags, garbage bags and newspaper sleeves are no longer accepted in our Single Stream Recycling Program due to dramatic changes in the worldwide use of recyclable materials.  These items must be placed in your trash cart with other non-recyclable items

Recyclables can either be set out for curbside collection or taken to the City Recycling Center at 2007 Southern Expressway. The recycling center is a drive through building with bins for cardboard, glass and single stream (all other items). For curbside pickup, recyclables should be placed in the dark green cart and at the curb before 7:30 AM on your recycling day.  We collect an average of 175 tons of recyclables monthly. Tours and presentations can be scheduled by calling (573) 339-6351. Single stream recycling is a sort-free system. Labels are acceptable but any food residue should be rinsed clean. Recyclables will not be accepted if placed in a bag of any kind inside of the recycling cart. The following recyclables (excluding glass) go in the dark green recycling cart:

- Corrugated cardboard, grayboard and chipboard, including soda, cereal, and frozen pizza boxes
- Newspaper, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, and paper
- Aluminum, steel and tin
- Household plastic containers (# 1, 2, 3, 5, 7)

More Street Repairs Starting Soon...

Work on these streets will begin as early as Aug. 15 on Siemers Drive, and the contractor will complete the list of repairs within a year. On a related note, West End is expected to start Aug. 22 following a material delay.

- Large portions of concrete patching will occur within each street section of Siemers from 74 to Richmond and Campster to Lambert
- El Rio – Putter’s to Lakewood
- Quail - Pheasant Cove to Caribou
- Pheasant Cove - Old Hopper to 3508 Pheasant Cove
- Glenview - Old Hopper to Cul-De-Sac

More Upcoming, Current and Recent Street Projects

This year's budget just started with over $20 million approved for street repair and renovation. We've mapped some of our projects online at cityofcape.org/streets. We'll soon be adding more projects to the list, and we are always out there filling potholes and doing rapid repairs (not mapped).

Weekly Work Output (FY21-22)

Here's a snapshot of some of what we do each week organized by each department's share of the budget. Just 500 City employees make a lot happen in service to Cape Girardeau's residents, businesses, and visitors. Thank you to everyone working in public service!
