Extra Holiday Trash and Tree Disposal

Got extra trash from the holidays?
Between Dec. 27 and Jan. 6, our Public Works Department will pick up a reasonable amount of extra trash. Just sit your bagged extra trash next to your cart on trash day (not on top of it). Be sure the lid is closed to avoid spillage. Staff will dump your cart, put the extra items in the cart and then dump the cart again. The amount of "extra trash" is limited to 3 to 4 bags that will fit inside the cart. Carts will only be dumped twice, so please consider recycling as much as possible.

Live Christmas Tree Disposal Options

- You can schedule a Wednesday Special Pickup for $5.75/per tree, plus the current fuel surcharge which changes monthly. Some available dates remain in January and February. Advanced scheduling required, call Public Works at 573-339-6351.

- Free Arena Park Drop Off in the southeast corner of Arena Park from Dec. 26 through the end of January for City of Cape residents. www.cityofcape.org/compost

Leaf piles must be kept free of limbs and other debris to avoid damaging the equipment.  Detailed information on the current year's program can be found in our Leaf Season Brochure. Scheduled routes are ongoing. Unscheduled routes will begin again in January, serving each property at least once by end of March.

Other Leaf Disposal Options

- Haul Your Leaves: A container will be available at the recycling center for leaf drop-off. The recycling center is located at 2007 Southern Expressway beside Public Works. It is accessible 24 hours a day/7 days a week. The Recycling Center is available free to City residents only.
- Mulch: Residents can mulch their existing leaves into their lawn by simply mowing over them. This is the most environmentally friendly option and releases nutrients back into the soil.
- Compost Bags: Bags are available at Utility Billing, Schnucks, and Food Giant. The bags are sold for $7.10 for a bundle of five. Call Public Works to schedule to have the bags picked up. This service is available year-round.

Connect with Management & Council

The City Council is the elected governing body for the City of Cape Girardeau and consists of the Mayor and six City Council Members. The Mayor is directly elected at-large (city-wide) for a four-year term and the City Council Members are elected from six wards for staggered four-year terms. Cape Girardeau is a "home rule" city with the Council-Manager form of government. Find meeting and contact information at cityofcape.org/council.
