Fireworks Sales, Use & Safety

The most important things you need to know about fireworks are the safety precautions and facts:

-The City prohibits the sale and/or discharge of fireworks within a certain distance of schools, hospitals, gas pumps, etc. Take a few minutes to review the ordinance linked from cityofcape.org/law as distances vary 50-600 feet.

-Adult supervision is the law.

-Even sparklers burn at temperatures of 1,200 degrees or more – hot enough to melt some metals.

-Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks. Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse.

-Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.

-Find more safety tips online or find the Fire Department or Police Department on social media for more tips.

-You can review all City fireworks safety ordinances at cityofcape.org/law

Public Works
The painting crew has been sprucing up traffic symbols and stop bars around town. Paint is sprayed inside a template with a high-pressure nozzle and glass beads are thrown on top of the wet paint. The beads stick and add reflectivity. You can tell by Todd's boots this isn't his first day on the job (pictured, right). Not pictured, our Stormwater Crew also recently replaced a 36" storm pipe on Cypress Ct. The old corrugated metal pipe had rusted out and was replaced with a high-performance polypropylene (PP) pipe that is more durable and will move water faster.

Fire Department

Every 3rd Wednesday of the month, the Region E HSRT (Homeland Security Response Team) trains on a specialized rescue topic. Back in April, when it was a little cooler out, crews trained on Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Emergencies. Mitigating these types of emergencies requires special training and protective gear to keep us safe. Check out the pictures below. The HSRT team is made up of members from the Cape Girardeau Fire Department, Jackson Fire Rescue, Sikeston Department of Public Safety, and Stoddard County Ambulance District

ENCORES
Water Valve Maintenance

Our Water Division, contracted to Alliance Water Resources, exercises water valves by turning them on and off to be sure they are operational. When valves are left without maintenance for long periods of time they can become hard to move which could be a serious problem during an emergency like a 3 a.m. water main break. We have 4,852 valves in Cape Girardeau and our goal is to exercise around 400/year.

Current and Upcoming
Street Renovation Projects

These street renovation projects were approved by voters through the Transportation Trust Fund (TTF). All residents and businesses could experience periodic limited access to sidewalks, driveways and on-street parking. The contractor will be notifying affected properties of impending closures and access issues as they progress

-Lappe Concrete started the Sprigg Street Improvement Project from William Street to Broadway recently. They will replace the road surface, adding new curb, sidewalk, and pavement along the length of the project. Work is anticipated to be complete by November 2022. The project was approved by voters with the Transportation Trust Fund sales tax renewal in 2015.

-West End reconstruction will start in the coming weeks and be complete within a year. The project will widen the current street, add sidewalks, and improve stormwater runoff between Rose and Bertling. The contractor, Fronabarger Concreters, will contact residents regarding any temporary limited access to driveways.

-College Street has started and Main Street from Roberts to Cape Rock Drive will go to bid this year.

-Other Concrete Repairs Scheduled for this Year

-El Rio - Bellavista to Lakeshore

-Quail - Pheasant Cove to Caribou

-Pheasant Cove - Old Hopper to 3508 Pheasant Cove

-Glenview - Old Hopper to Cul-De-Sac

-Siemers - 74 to Richmond

-Siemers - Campster to Lambert

This list does not include the rapid repairs or concrete section repairs done by our in-house crew, or the TTF asphalt repairs coming later this year.

Glass Bottles and Jars
are 100% Recyclable

They can be recycled into other glass bottles and jars over and over again without losing quality or purity. In the City of Cape we have collection bins at the Osage Centre, Arena Building, Recycling Center and Fire Stations 1, 2 and 3. Glass is not picked up curbside and only glass bottles and jars are accepted at the drop off sites. Drinking glasses, windows and glass objects have different chemical properties and melt at different temperatures so they are not recyclable in our program. www.cityofcape.org/recycling
