Dear Carpinterians,

This weekend we have the opportunity to celebrate a really exciting milestone for Carpinteria. The Grand Opening of the Carpinteria Community Library on Saturday, July 16 marks the culmination of years of work by City staff, our City Council, members of Friends of the Library and scores of Carpinterians who care about the future of our library.

The fact that Carpinteria has a new library may not be obvious to many. It shares the same address as the old library—same walls, roof and doors. But this new library is 100% Carpinteria’s. Every decision for this library is made in Carpinteria with Carpinterians in mind. Formerly run by City of Santa Barbara under contract to the County, Carpinteria Community Library is now an independent community resource managed by the City of Carpinteria. Our collection, our programs, our staff have all been chosen to best serve this community.

How did we make this possible? YOU made this possible. Carpinterians supported Measure X in 2018 and created a new revenue stream with a 1.25% sales tax increase. The funds from Measure X support much more than this library. They also cover local roadway improvements, public safety and capital projects.

This weekend, please join us in celebrating OUR new library. The festivities take place from 1 to 4 p.m. and will include live music, a ceremonial ribbon cutting, refreshments and a scavenger hunt for kids. Community members will be able to tour the new library, check out its fresh look and meet our new Carpinteria library staff.

I hope to see you there!

Stay Well and Stay Safe,

Mayor Wade Nomura
