Message from the Mayor

Dear Carpinterians,

Halloween is approaching. Spooky and funny decorations are going up all around town, and the hunt for that perfect costume is underway. In the Downtown T, merchants are preparing for Safe Downtown Trick-or-Treat, a well-loved Carpinteria event that was canceled for a couple years due to COVID but will return on Friday, Oct. 28 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. It will be followed by a costume contest at the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center.

And don’t forget about the “Dia de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead) celebration events happening on the 30th at the Carpinteria Cemetery and around town. Also, the annual C-Dog Howl-O-Ween event will take place on the 30th. There are two dog costume events—one in person at El Carro Park at 3 p.m. and the second is an online dog costume competition, both with prizes. For more information go to www.c-dog.org or their Facebook page.

Please remember that these fun and popular activities often bring out crowds. Drivers in the area during these events, particularly the Downtown Trick-or-Treat, should be aware that patience will be required, and caution is imperative. If you are accompanying a costumed kiddo to the event, please be respectful of traffic laws and be sure your children practice safety.

The General Election is also approaching. There are important local, regional, state and national races and issues on the Nov. 8 ballot, and I encourage everyone to get informed and cast your vote. As Americans, we have the privilege of electing our representatives and having a voice in our leadership and policies we will live by.

I am concerned by a number of recent events, including the spreading of incorrect information, defamatory comments, as well as the theft of signs. Fortunately, Carpinterians typically check the facts themselves, and then can see through inappropriate behavior. Even though we may have a difference of opinions, I urge everybody to look at both sides, respect each other’s opinion and behave as “Carpinterians.”

I look forward to the elections being over so we can all come together as one community. Presidential elections tend to bring out bigger voter numbers, but it’s important for us to practice our right to vote in every election. The deadline for online voter registration is today, Oct. 24. Learn more about the election and how to register at sbcvote.com/

I have received my ballot in the mail and will be completing it and returning it soon. You can mail your ballot directly or drop it in one of the two Drop Boxes located in Carpinteria: City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave., or Casas de las Flores, 4090 Via Real.

Thank you for participating in the upcoming election. I consider voting to be both a privilege and a way to have a voice in our community!

Stay Well and Stay Safe,

Mayor Wade Nomura

City News & More

Eagle Scouts Honored by Council
At the Oct. 10 City Council meeting, Eagle Scouts Ian Thomas and Matthew Lamberti received Certificates of Commendation for completing important projects that benefit the Carpinteria community. To earn Eagle Scout rank, Thomas oversaw the construction of new stairs at Jelly Bowl beach, and Lamberti installed new tables in the picnic area at Carpinteria State Beach. The two young men thanked family members, the other members of Boy Schout Troop 50 and the donors who made the projects possible. Councilmembers thanked Thomas and Lamberti for their hard work, and Mayor Wade Nomura noted, “The attainment of Eagle Scout is very rare, very unique … congratulations for that.”

Safe Trick-or-Treating returns to the Downtown “T”
Local merchants in the Downtown “T” will be ready to welcome little trick-or-treaters on Friday, Oct. 28 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. as they celebrate the Safe Trick-or-Treating in the Downtown “T”.  Merchants with orange pumpkin signs in the front window of their business will be handing out treats, and members of the City’s HOST program will also give out candy at the Seal Fountain kiosk during the event. After the Downtown “T” Trick-or-Treating event at 5 p.m., the Carpinteria Arts Center at 855 Linden Ave. will hold a costume contest co-hosted by Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, The Alcazar Theater, Carpinteria Children’s Project and Boys and Girls Club.
