Message from the Mayor

Dear Carpinterians,

Over the several days, California has experienced relentless heat. This type of heatwave isn’t just uncomfortable, it’s dangerous. Knowing that we have vulnerable people in our community, the City of Carpinteria designated the Carpinteria Community Library as a Cooling Center before the heat set in. The library has provided an air-conditioned environment to relax and access drinking water and bathrooms—a huge benefit to many during these hot days.

Another major threat that the heat brings is power interruptions caused by spiking demand for electricity in late afternoon and evening hours. Blackouts are not only inconvenient, but dangerous for those that need energy for medical reasons. In an effort to reduce the burden to the power grid, the City of Carpinteria has been using back-up generators. We joined many agencies locally and statewide in this effort prompted by Governor Newsom’s proclamation of a State of Emergency. These agencies typically avoid the potential nuisances that generators can cause, but remaining fully functional without further stressing the power grid has been imperative during this heatwave.

I want to thank our residents who have made efforts to conserve energy during peak hours. By pre-cooling homes, charging batteries, using appliances early in the day, and spending time at the beach, we have managed to avoid the rotating power outages that could become necessary due to over-demand.

In the coming days, I am asking our senior citizens to dedicate a few minutes to filling out our Community Needs Assessment Survey. Please let us know about the types of senior programs you might be interested in, whether you would attend classes or events at a local senior center, and what challenges might stand in the way of your access to a local senior center. I look forward to receiving your valuable feedback which will help our City Council make decisions about how best to address your priorities with our resources. Click HERE to fill out the survey in English or HERE for Spanish, or pick one up at City Hall or Carpinteria Community Library.

Stay Cool and Stay Safe,

Mayor Wade Nomura
