Community Input Sought for Awarded $300,000 Parks Renovation Grant

The City of Davis announced today that multiple community meetings will occur in October for eight City parks that will be renovated and enhanced through a recently awarded $300,000 grant from the California Parks and Recreational Society’s (CPRS) Statewide Healthy Play Initiative. All are welcome to attend the following in-person meetings hosted by the City’s Parks and Community Services staff to discuss plans, themes and colors:

October 11, 5 p.m. – 5:45 p.m.: Donato Park (bike path/greenbelt at Costa Verde Street)
October 11, 6 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.: Campanilla Park (bike path/greenbelt at Arroyo Avenue)
October 12, 5 p.m. – 5:45 p.m.: Mace Ranch Park (3141 5th Street)
October 12, 6 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.: La Playa Park (3350 La Playa Drive)
October 13, 5 p.m. – 5:45 p.m.: Sandy Motley Park (corner of Leonardo Court and Moore Blvd.)
October 13, 6 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.: Westwood Park (corner of Barkley Street and Calaveras Avenue)
October 17, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.: Playfields Park (2500 Research Drive)
October 18, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.: Sycamore Park (1313 Sycamore Lane)

“Access to local parks, recreation and outdoor facilities is important to the physical, emotional and mental health and wellness of our residents,” said Mayor Lucas Frerichs. “It’s important to hear about priorities from our community, so we know how to best use the grant funds for these upcoming planned park upgrades.”

In addition to the in-person meetings, postcards and a survey will be sent to the neighborhoods near these park locations to get feedback. After the survey results are in and all the meetings are done, staff will schedule discussions regarding the survey results with the neighborhoods the week of November 1. Final results will be presented to the Recreation and Park Commission at its November 16 meeting.

Enhancements to the eight parks in Davis include improvements to the tot areas, fitness additions, replacements to the primary structures, additional equipment or others. In addition, Playfields Park will be renovated into an Inclusive Park, which involves evidence-based design and programming considerations for creating outdoor play environments and experiences that address the physical and social inclusion for people of all ages and abilities.

The City’s Parks and Community Services department will also be hosting a Park Design 101 Zoom meeting on Tuesday, September 27, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. to give residents an opportunity to learn what is involved when renovating a playground. For more information and the Zoom link, visit:
