Returns show City Council incumbents in lead

Nov. 8 election results posted by the Registrar of Voters show two incumbents leading in the three-way race for two open seats on the Del Mar City Council.

As of Friday morning, the returns show the following percentages of the vote: Terry Gaasterland (44.37%); Dwight Worden (28.81%), and Steve Quirk (26.82%).

The results are unofficial as the Registrar of Voters continues to count votes. Registrar certification of the election results will occur on or before Dec. 8.

Monday: City Council meeting

A regular meeting of the City Council begins at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 14 on Zoom.

River channel excavation begins

Two weeks of digging at the San Dieguito River inlet began this week. Heavy equipment is working to clear a buildup of sand and open lagoon basins to tidal flushing.

As an added benefit, the excavated sand — an estimated 16,000 cubic yards of it — will be dumped and spread on the beach south of the river mouth to 18th Street.

The job is scheduled to run through Nov. 23. Work hours are set for 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and, if needed, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays. Equipment will be parked on the beach overnight and cordoned off for safety. Beach access south of the river and west of Camino del Mar will be closed. During sand placement, beachgoers are encouraged to gain safe access to the beach at 26th Street.
