City Of Dublin News : October Is Fire Prevention Month

Government and Politics

From: City of Dublin

The City of Dublin has lowered its flags to half-staff, in honor of the 41st Annual National Fallen Firefighters' Memorial Service. The memorial event coincides with the 100th Annual National Fire Prevention Week, which runs October 9-15.  At the Memorial Service, the U.S. Fire Service will pay tribute to the lives of 148 firefighters who died in the line of duty in the past year.  The ceremony will also honor the 469 fallen members who would have been recognized at the canceled in-person 2020 and 2021 Fallen Firefighter Memorial ceremonies. The annual recognition of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial began with legislation signed by former President George W. Bush in 2001, following the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

The theme of this year's Fire Prevention Week is, "Fire Won't Wait. Plan Your Escape."  Fire moves fast!  You could have less than two minutes to get out safely, once your smoke alarms sound.  Smoke alarms need to be in every bedroom, outside of the sleeping areas, and on each level of your home.  Knowing two ways out of every room is an important piece of your home fire escape plan.  One of the best things you can do for yourself and your family is to rehearse what to do in the event of an emergency, such as a house fire.  Have an outside meeting place, that is a safe distance from your home, where everyone should meet. The City of Dublin would like to acknowledge and thank the Alameda County Fire Department and all public safety personnel who often risk their lives in service to the Dublin community.  We also pay tribute to Dublin firefighter Sekou Turner, who suffered a heart attack and died on duty while assisting another heart attack victim in 2002.
