Where Does it Go?

With curbside organics recycling in full swing, many wonder if bioplastics or “compostable” plastics can be placed in the green bin. The answer, while surprising to some, is no. Bioplastics can only be broken down in industrial composting facilities, none of which currently exist in San Diego County. The contents of Encinitas’ curbside organics bins get sent to EDCO’s Anaerobic Digestor Facility which does not accept any bioplastics. Bioplastics must be put in the trash.

Learn more about what can and can’t go in your curbside organics bin on the City’s Organics Webpage
