City of Frisco hosts inaugural 'Frisco Unity Day' honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Saturday, January 21 is Frisco Unity Day: The Dream Comes Alive. Join us for a free concert featuring jazz and gospel performances inside the George A. Purefoy Municipal Center, 6101 Frisco Square Blvd. The winner of the 'Linking Cultures of Frisco' Orator Competition will also recite a portion of their speech, which reflects what Dr. King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech means to them.   

• 10:00 a.m.: Friendship Baptist Church of The Colony Unified Choir 
• 10:40 a.m.: Oration – 'Linking Cultures of Frisco'
• 11:00 a.m.: Dakota Andersen Jazz Quartet, UNT  

Residents are encouraged to participate in a food drive benefitting Frisco Family Services. Canned or packaged, nonperishable food items will be collected on Friday, January 20, inside the City Hall atrium from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., or drop them at the event on January 21 between 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Look for the the ‘Frisco Unity Day’ stand.

Frisco Recruiting Residents to Volunteer for Comprehensive Plan Committee, Help Shape City's Future

‘How would you like to see Frisco’s remaining 16-percent of undeveloped land take shape?’

That’s one of the question’s staff will be posing to members of the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee (CPAC). Earlier this month, the Frisco City Council approved a process for selecting volunteers to serve on the next CPAC. A total of 23 volunteers will serve. Seventeen will be council-appointed, including three members who served on the 2015 CPAC. The remaining volunteers will come from selected city boards, as well as the Frisco Chamber of Commerce and the Frisco Independent School District. Committee members must live or do business in Frisco. 
 
Applicants will be asked about their ‘vision’ for Frisco and how their skill set qualifies them for the volunteer committee. City leaders plan to appoint members who will represent people living throughout the city’s four quadrants.

WATCH: Universal Announces Plans for Theme Park in Frisco

Universal Parks & Resorts has announced a one-of-a-kind theme park, unlike any other in the world. It’s planned to be a smaller regional park specifically designed to inspire fun for families with young children. 

Universal Parks & Resorts selected the city of Frisco as the area for this new concept given the city’s growing population and ability to attract businesses to the area. The proposed location for the new concept is east of the Dallas North Tollway and north of Panther Creek Parkway.

McAfee, a global leader in online protection, announced today that it will be opening a new regional headquarters at The Star in Frisco later this year. As the latest corporate addition to Frisco, McAfee is committed to partnering with the community, local students, and local tech start-ups to expand awareness around STEM. Visit the Frisco Economic Development Corporation's website for full announcement.

On May 6, Frisco residents will be able to vote for the positions of Frisco City Council Member Place 5, Council Member Place 6, and Mayor. The Candidate Packet is now available for download and includes information about eligibility requirements, required forms, and important deadlines. City Council Meeting Notes - January 17

At Tuesday's City Council meeting, Mayor Jeff Cheney recognized: 

• "Cholangiocarcinoma Awareness Month" and was joined by Frisco resident, Diana Park (pictured with her daughter above) on behalf of the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation in hopes to bring awareness to this rare, but very deadly cancer of the bile duct. 
• "School Board Recognition Day," reading a proclamation presented to the Frisco ISD Board of Trustees. January is School Board Recognition Month in Texas.
