The City of Gaithersburg celebrates and honors Women’s History Month with an art and poetry exhibit, storytime programs, discussions, and more. Celebrated annually during the month of March, Women's History Month highlights the contributions of women to events in history, culture and society.

Women’s Caucus for Art: Our Voices Carry Weight

On display through April 23

Activity Center at Bohrer Park

Our Voices Carry Weight is a juried exhibition of two-dimensional artwork and poetry in partnership with the Women’s Caucus for Art, Washington, DC Chapter (WCA/DC). A reception and poetry reading, during which visitors can meet the artists and poets, will be held on Saturday, March 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. All are welcome to attend; light refreshments will be served.  African-American Women Artists with International Ties

Celebrating Women’s History Month, we will join Leila Ann Benjamin via zoom to learn about Black women artists across a variety of media (paintings, prints, sculpture, textiles, mixed media and more). Their works explore themes such as identity, perseverance, and self-reliance. All of the artists have ancestral or professional artistic connections with Europe, Mexico, Nigeria, Ghana, or Haiti, and all have achieved national or international recognition.

Learn about the lives of women in Gaithersburg’s Black community. Historian Anthony Cohen of the Menare Foundation will share some of his research from the Gaithersburg History Project: Black Gaithersburg on the lives of women in the community, including home life, work life, and the organizations they created.

Meet women scientists from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), National Institutes of Health, and other STEM agencies and learn about what they do. Welcome from Dr. Greta Babakhanova, President of Women in STEM Executive Board, NIST. Participate in hands-on activities, demonstrations, and “Ask a Scientist” opportunities. Recommended for middle and high school students.

Tasty Books: Mae Among the Stars

Explore the tasty and adventurous world of food and books using all five senses. Stories come to life as they are read aloud and explored with hands-on crafts and snack making. Join us as we read Mae Among the Stars, written by Roda Ahmed and illustrated by Stasia Burrington. This inspiring story follows the dreams and life of Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to travel to space. This is the perfect way to celebrate Women's History Month with your little ones as they learn about this trailblazer at NASA and become inspired to reach for the stars.
