Statue presentation happening this Friday at recreation center
A new statue honoring Jessie McGuire Dent is getting installed at the McGuire Dent Recreation Center this week!

Solel International, a Houston-based organization that advocates for the spectrum of arts to connect communities and preserve culture, will install the 8-foot statue Thursday as a gift to the City. The statue commemorates Jessie McGuire Dent, who was an African American educator, civil rights activist, suffragist, and founder of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. from Galveston. This will be the first statue commemorating a female historic figure in Galveston.

The public is welcome to join us for the statue presentation on Friday, July 1 at 11 a.m. inside the recreation center at 2222 28th Street.
