-On Friday, February 24, the Police Department was notified that Communications Officers Payne, Scarborough, Strobbe, and Communications Supervisor Buffington were selected to receive the Outstanding Team Performance in a Critical Incident award through the MARC Public Safety Program’s Outstanding Performance Awards.  They were nominated for their performance during a critical incident where Officer Daniel Vasquez was murdered.  This award will be presented at the annual Telecommunications Appreciation Celebration on April 14.  This team also was recently recognized for a similar award through the State of Missouri.

-Brandon VanGordon started with Municipal Services on Monday, February 27.  Welcome aboard!

-Officer J. Smith was nominated for recognition by several North Kansas City High School staff members through the District’s Culture of Excellence program.  Officer Smith was recently notified that he had been selected as an Honor Cadre recipient and will be formally recognized at a future Board of Education meeting.  Out of over 3,000 employees district-wide, only 40 Honor Cadre recipients were selected for this honor.  Officer Smith is currently assigned as a School Resource officer at the High School.

-Congratulations to Anthony Highfill with Water Services for receiving his Missouri Department of Natural Resources Public Drinking Water Program Certificate of Competency!

-25th Avenue from Swift to Buchanan will be closed beginning Monday, March 6, and reopen on Monday, April 3.  This closure is necessary to complete utility work in the Right of Way. 

-Wednesday, March 8, 2023, is the last day to register to vote in Clay County for the Tuesday, April 4, 2023 election.

-The North Kansas City Fire Department will host their annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, March 11, from 7-11 a.m. at Station #1, located at 1815 Howell Street.  Breakfast is $5 per person, and proceeds benefit the Fire Fighters Community Service Organization of North Kansas City.

-Join Mayor Delong for his annual Resident State of the City Address on Thursday, March 16, at 6 p.m. at the NKC High School.   During the event, you will have the opportunity to hear directly from Mayor DeLong and City staff about the progress we have made over the past year and some of our plans for the year ahead.  This event is not just a presentation, but also an opportunity for you to voice your concerns and ask questions.  Submit your questions in advance using the below link.  https://www.nkc.org/government/elected-officials/resident-state-of-the-city

-Staff has been coordinating a new event this year, an NKC Candidate Forum.  Patterned after the NKC School District’s Candidate Forum, this event aims to allow voters to hear from all candidates running for City Council.  The NKC Candidate Forum will be held Thursday, March 30, from 6-7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.  Residents can watch the Forum in-person, on Channel 2, or via the City’s YouTube Channel.  NKC High School debate students will facilitate the event.  The Forum will be about an hour, and candidates are welcome to chat with residents that attend in person after the event.  All NKC City Council candidates on the April 4 Ballot have been invited to participate in this event.

-Registration for youth soccer will close soon!  6U leagues for 6-year-old kids and 8U leagues for kids ages 7-8.  Program fees are $70-80 and include a t-shirt and award.  Register by Monday, March 6, at www.nkcparksandrec.org/youth_soccer.

-Registration for Youth Co-Ed Baseball and Girls Softball is now open through Wednesday, March 29.  The season begins the week of May 22.  Register at www.nkcparksandrec.org/coedbaseball or www.nkcparksandrec.org/girlssoftball.

-Only a few days left to sign up your team for Adult Softball!  We have 1 spot left for a Men’s Team and 3 spots left for a Co-ed team.  Don’t wait!  Register at www.nkcparksandrec.org/softball.

-Apply to be an Artist or Maker at the 7th Annual Arts in the Park!  Arts in the Park is a two-day arts festival in North Kansas City that supports the Arts!  To find out more information or to apply, visit www.artsinthepark.org.

-Residents in North Kansas City have options when it comes to utility assistance.  The Low Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP) can help with one-time water and wastewater bill payments.  Visit mydss.mo.gov or call 816-831-1830 for more information and see if you are eligible.  There is also assistance available to renters for utility payments under the State Assistance for Housing Relief (SAFHR) program.  Please visit Missouri COVID Mortgage, Rent, and Housing Assistance Programs (mohousingresources.com) to see if you qualify for assistance.
