Participants in the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) Community Work Program (CWP) recently completed a series of projects in the City of Melrose.

Over a two-week period at the end of June, crew members – under the direct supervision of a correction officer – completed both painting and beautification projects in the City. Among the projects completed was the painting of seven rooms at the former Beebe School, which will serve as temporary library space while the Melrose Public Library undergoes extensive renovations.

Mayor Paul Brodeur and Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian visited the Beebe to see the work on June 30.

“It was great to visit the Beebe School and see the important work crew members did to help prepare the building for it next use,” said Sheriff Koutoujian. “By choosing to participate in CWP, individuals in our care are not only continuing their preparation to make a successful re-entry, but are also actively giving back to our communities. I’m glad we were able to assist Mayor Brodeur and the people of Melrose with this project.”

“I’m honored to once again partner with Sheriff Koutoujian’s Office and to support the rehabilitation of these individuals and our public spaces in Melrose,” said Mayor Paul Brodeur. “Programs such as this one benefit our community and the individuals who complete them. I wish these individuals a positive re-entry into their communities and thank them for their service to ours.”

CWP provides services as requested by municipalities, school districts, housing authorities and other public entities. Crews are comprised of incarcerated individuals nearing the end of their sentences who have completed individualized treatment plans – such as programming for substance use disorders, educational/vocational training and other needs.  All participants of the CWP have been screened and approved for participation by MSO staff.
