News from the City of Orlando

Almost 5,000 kids ran, skipped or walked through our neighborhood centers this summer. We gave them a place to play basketballcool off with water slides, have poetry slams and learn new things like photography.

What we found out, most kids actually want to learn and be busy during the summer months. Our youngest residents are ambitious and hungry for information. We love providing a place where they know they can get that and be close to home.

And guess what, just because the summer is over, doesn’t mean we closed our doors. With continual after-school programming, activities and educational opportunities, our youth have a place to blow of some steam and/or keep learning once the school bells rings and class is over.

Have you signed your kids up for something fun or educational after school yet?

Here's to 100 Years!
The building we know today as the Dr. J.B. Callahan Neighborhood Center and the land on which it stands are part of the proud history of Orlando.

This year marks 100 years since the facility opened in 1922 as Jones High School. When Jones moved to its current location on Rio Grande Avenue, the building was converted into Callahan Elementary in honor of prominent physician J.B. Callahan.

Callahan Elementary closed during the desegregation process, and with support from the city and neighborhood leaders, it was reconstructed into a neighborhood center with the original building’s façade.

Today, we’re proud to continue to use this facility as it was from the start: a place of learning and community.
