No, we’re not talking about July 4th. On Sunday, our nation will celebrate Juneteenth to recognize the end of slavery in the United States, dating back to June 19, 1865. That day, slaves living in Texas learned about the Emancipation Proclamation, which was issued by President Abraham Lincoln months earlier.
Commemorating Juneteenth gives us the opportunity to share our pride in civil rights progress, but also recognize that the struggle for equity still exists and our collective work to uplift and create a more inclusive country must continue.

This Saturday, at our inaugural Juneteenth Celebration at Lake Lorna Doone Park we will honor Dr. Alzo Reddick with the first Juneteenth Champion Award in recognition of his work to further progress, equality, equity, and inclusion.

We invite you to join us as we mark the Juneteenth holiday. The free event is open to all and will feature entertainment, children’s activities and food available for purchase.
