Government and Politics

September 24, 2022

From: City of Orlando

Have you heard? Six planets, including Mercury, are in retrograde. If you’ve found yourself losing your keys, missing appointments, or experiencing more mishaps in general, let yourself off the hook and attribute it to the half dozen planets currently moonwalking in the sky.

The good news is, we’ve got some resources to help you take control of any chaos that may have found its way into your life:

Learn hands-only CPR – it takes 30 minutes to learn how to save a life

Request a home security assessment from OPD – it's free

Sign up for a class at Leu Gardens – be Zen with the roses

Prepare for a hurricane –  be sure not to stress eat your hurricane snacks

The Eclipse of Loss

Today, Mayor Dyer, with City Commissioners and the Mayor’s Veterans Advisory Council, hosted the city’s annual POW-MIA Recognition Day ceremony in honor of the United States military prisoners of war and those still missing in action. The ceremony reaffirms the city's commitment to bringing captured prisoners of war home to their families and vowing to never forget those missing in action.

This year, University of Central Florida Army ROTC cadets led a symbolic “setting of the table” where each item on the table represents the commitment to the relentless pursuit of missing members and to never forget the sacrifices of the U.S. Armed Forces. The ceremony’s keynote speaker was Stephen Grubb, a proud gold star son of United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Wilmer Newlin Grubb whose aircraft crashed during the Vietnam War and was captured.

A Waxing Moon as We Celebrate Hispanic Heritage

In special celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 2 City Commissioner Tony Ortiz will host the City of Orlando’s Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Event on September 29, 2022, at Camping World Stadium. This community wide event will feature Latin food, music and entertainment.

In addition to the community event, we’re hosting an art exhibition featuring 27 local artists, showcasing the richness of Latin American history and heritage through visual arts. The art exhibition will run from September 16 - November 13, 2022, at the Terrace Gallery at Orlando City Hall.

City Boards Bring Elements Together

Join Mayor Dyer and representatives from our Citizen Advisory Boards on Wednesday October 5, at 5:30 p.m. at The Monroe in downtown Orlando for our Boards and Brews event to learn how you can make an impact by serving on a city board.

Public involvement to these appointed advisory bodies is an important and valued part of city government. As board members, residents contribute to the policy-making process, offering valuable input and review of city programs. City Advisory Boards bring new ideas to the table and give a voice to all the diverse segments of our community, providing the input needed to help the city make the best, most informed and inclusive decisions possible.

A New Moon Will Rise at Monday's City Council Meetings

On Monday at 10 a.m., the Orlando City Council will hear a workshop on the Downtown Action Plan.  The plan builds on the city’s vision for Downtown that was created through the Project DTO process in 2015.  This action plan aims to take those big, transformational ideas and cast them into implementable strategies and concepts.

The regularly scheduled City Council meeting will occur at 2 p.m., following the downtown focused workshop. Then, at 5:01 p.m. City Council will hold the second, and final, Budget Hearing to discuss the City of Orlando Budget for fiscal year 2022-2023.

The Planets Aligned for This Small Business

No, you’re not having déjà vu, we’re here to talk about another wine-iversary! Thankfully, we know you’re not whining about more wining.

Quantum Leap Winery is celebrating 10 years! Co-owned by Jill Ramsier and David Forrester, the two friends came together to make what they called their “quantum leap of faith” to embark on a career focused on their mutual love of wine. Together, they’ve successfully meshed Jill’s experience as a restaurant and industry executive and David’s expertise as an environmental industry pioneer to create a sustainable, environmentally conscience, local winery in Orlando.

Jill and David search for good quality, sustainably grown wine from around the world, to bring to Quantum Leap. The wine is then stored, finished, blended and packaged on-site in order to substantially reduce the winery’s carbon footprint. So not only do you feel good drinking the wine, you’re doing good for the environment while you’re at it.

To learn more about Quantum Leap Winery, visit quantumleapwinery.com, or pop on over to see them at 1312 Wilfred Drive.
