City of Orlando News: Think Outside - No Box Required

Government and Politics

August 22, 2022

From: City of Orlando

We’re back with another issue of City News featuring random facts about city services/programs. After all, why should kids get all the back to school fun and learn new things?

In addition to important services like garbage pickup and wastewater, we also provide services that help some of our other “residents.” According to Wikipedia, a very trusted source (*insert sarcasm*), parks are natural areas used for human enjoyment. Well, you probably know about the human amenities our parks have to offer, like our 115 parks, but did you know about the non-human ones?

Currently, our parks have the following “amenities” for some of our non-human friends:
Bat houses
Bird houses
Owl house
Fowl barns
Horse barn
Pig enclosure
Goat enclosure

Who knew we were a metropolis full of barnyard animals?! If you want to check some of these amenities out, or to say hello to a furry or fowl friend, head on over to Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake, because although we are an urban jungle, we have a lot of beautiful green space.

Mentor Your Future Workforce
We’re looking for businesses to provide mentorship and internship opportunities for youth in our community. Businesses can enroll in our Youth Employment Program to provide youth and young adults 16 - 25 with opportunities to gain hands-on working experience. We need businesses in a variety of fields including hospitality, healthcare and sustainability. We’re also looking for trade opportunities including plumbing, electricians and AC. All opportunities are welcome and encouraged.

Help us grow our city’s future workforce.

Snag a Vendor Spot in Eola Wonderland
It's the most wonderful time of the year (or...soon will be!). The elves at City Hall are dreaming of a white Christmas, one with carolers, hot chocolate and a holiday market too. We listened and heard you like to shop during the holidays! So, we’re calling all artisans and creators of one-of-a-kind gifts to make holiday dreams come true!

As we kick off our first Holiday Market with the Tree Lighting Celebration on December 2 at Lake Eola Park, we are looking to fill our market with retail and food and beverage vendors for the month of December. Are you interested in becoming a Holiday Market Vendor? Applications are now open until Friday, September 2 at 5 p.m. EST.
