City of Plainview News : Winter Time Water Conservation Measures – Insulated Spigot Covers Available

Every winter, many homeowners face the expense and inconvenience of frozen water pipes. But you can cross that off your list of winter worries by taking a few simple precautions:

-The biggest threat to your wintertime water bill is a pipe freezing and then bursting. A disaster like that could send thousands of gallons of water rushing into your house, resulting in both a nasty water bill and enormous home repair costs.

-If you have pipelines in the attic, an unheated garage or cold crawl space under the house, wrap the water pipes before temperatures drop below freezing.

-Winterize your pipes as well, insulating any that run outdoors.

-Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses. Detaching a hose allows water to drain from the faucet. Otherwise, a single, hard overnight freeze can burst either the faucet or the pipe it’s connected to.

-Insulated Spigot Covers are inexpensive and can save from a potential costly repair.

-Find the master shutoff. If a pipe bursts anywhere in the house – kitchen, bath, basement or crawl space – this valve turns it off. Be sure everyone in the family knows where it is and what it does.

Also, the City of Plainview has insulated spigot covers available to the public. They are first come, first serve and each household may receive two (2). Spigot covers can be picked up at City Hall, 202 W. 5th Street, beginning Tuesday, November 1st during normal business hours (Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Friday 8:00 a.m. – Noon).

We appreciate the partnership with Sutherlands HomeBase to make these available to citizens.
