City of Plainview’s Unger Memorial Library Hosts Award Night for the Summer Reading Program

This year’s grand prize winner was Sophia Moore, reading 12,360 minutes (206 hours, 8.58 days). She received three Sod Poodle tickets, a special certificate and a large sea lion animal/pillow. This is Moore’s second year in a row to be announced the grand prize winner.

The goals for time read in each category during the challenge is Kindergarten through 3rd grade - 15 minutes daily, grades 3rd – 6th – 30 minutes daily, grades 6th – 8th - 45 minutes daily and grades 9th -12th – 60 minutes daily and adults 90 minutes per day.

The Reading Challenge began on Tuesday, June 1st and concluded on Friday, July 15th. The Challenge was based on the time spent reading, not the number of books read.

Readers who hit specific milestones (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) were honored with brag tags including:  

Early Reader Group (Grades K-3)

-169 minutes read (25% of goal) – William Allen
-507 minutes read (75% of goal) – Tell Terrell
-675 minutes read (100% of goal) – Madeline Dyson, Ray Hatch, Elora Massie, Mitchell Moore, Ezekiel Romero, and Noah Turk

Middle Reader Group (Grades 3-6)

-338 minutes read (25% of goal) – Cali Carr
-675 minutes read (50% of goal) – Camila Sifuentes
-1,013 minutes read (75% of goal) – Tye Terrell
-1,350 minutes read (100% of goal) – Genevieve Alcozer, Sean Allen, Olivia Dyson, Malessa Hatch, and Sophia Moore

Genevieve Alcozer also received three brag tags for the reading books on the Bluebonnet Master List

High School Group (Grades 9-12)

-1,350 minutes read (50% of goal) – Joshua Starkey
-3,700 minutes read (100% of goal) – Montana Moore

Adult Reading Challenge:

-1,018 minutes (25% of goal) – Kendra Terrell
-3,043 minutes (75% of goal) – Emilia Moore
-4,050 minutes (100% of goal) – Rosalinda Rozales

The reading program included 86 registered participants with a total of 55,778 recorded reading minutes, (980 hours or 41 days and 6 weeks); this number is most likely higher as not all minutes for the challenge were reported to the Library.

Contributors to the Summer Reading Program include Friends of the Unger Memorial Library, Collaborative Summer Library Program, The Texas State Library & Archives Commission and Eastern New Mexico State University.
