The course is designed to instruct participants in the skills and techniques required to teach the fundamentals of swimming and water safety. Anyone interested in teaching swimming lessons with the City of Sedona must have a Starfish Swimming Instructor certification. After successfully completing the course, participants will be certified to teach swim lessons as a Starfish Swim Instructor.

Must be 16 years old by the last day of course taken. 

Essential Functions

1. Determine the swimmer/non-swimmer skills of each patron attending the facility. 
2. Teach swimming and water safety skills to individuals of various ages and ability levels.
3. Plan and effectively organize class time through weekly lesson plans and time management.
4. Evaluate students participating in swim lessons.
5. Submit completed skills sheets, report cards, attendance records and any other swim lesson program documentation in a timely manner.
6. Communicate effectively with student and parent(s).
7. Provide competent, safe instruction using recognized lead-up skills as established by the swim lesson program.
8. Teach with encouragement and positive reinforcement.
9. Provide for consistency in instruction by working each assigned session/class. 
10. Communicate effectively with lifeguards/pool staff on duty and act as a team in an emergency.
11. Maintain a sanitary and clean pool environment, free from defective equipment and unsafe conditions. 
12. Assist with maintaining proper quality standards and follow written guidelines for testing water, chemical usage, storage, and safety.
13. Adhere to all facility safety and emergency procedures, guidelines, and instructions, including emergency action plan, staff handbook and Safety Data Sheet use and location.
14. Enforce pool and facility rules in a consistent and professional manner using positive and corrective feedback.
15. Take precautions and preventative action necessary to ensure the safety of pool users and staff.
16. Attend and participate in all scheduled staff meetings and mandated trainings, including but not limited to in-service training and physical conditioning.
17. Provide answers to inquiries from patrons and the public.
18. Complete and maintain accurate and efficient reporting, including but not limited to daily attendance records, accident injury reports, class and program registration, daily shift report, and chemical logbook.
19. Ensure all gates and doors are secured and that the premises have been vacated at the closing of the facility.
20. Assist in other department programs including special events and programs. 
21. Present professional and positive appearance and attitude and maintain a high standard of customer service.
22. Possess mature judgment and sound decision making.

Background Check

The selected applicant must be able to pass a reference/background check and drug test.

Benefits

This seasonal, temporary position includes Arizona Sick Leave (1 hour for every 30 hours worked) but does not include health insurance, vacation or flex time benefits.  Arizona State Retirement benefits may be activated upon the employee working more than twenty hours for more than twenty weeks.
