Substation Technician

Installation, testing, maintenance and repairs of City electric substations, relays, metering and traffic signals. Responsible for substation inspections, meter installations, and traffic signal maintenance; other duties include street light repair, tree trimming and electric services

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Install, tests and programs electric substation devices such as relays and meters for proper operation.

Preforms testing on substation backup batteries.

Maintains proper housekeeping at Substation sites.

Performs weekly substation maintenance.

Performs infrared testing on substation transformers, switches and devices.

Keeps accurate records of information regarding substation operations, devices tested and repaired, and materials used.

Operates and maintains electric SCADA system.

Performs infrared testing on substation transformers, switches and devices.

Arranges for annual substation transformer and devices oil testing.

Assists with configuring managing and maintaining SCADA and traffic signal data network connections including fiber optic cable, copper data networking, and wireless radio stations.

Assists in installing and maintain various security devices including cameras and alarms.

Tests, programs, calibrates and repairs electric meters to meet standards.

Plans and installs metering installations for larger scale customers.

Tests and programs large capacity meters for industrial customers to determine accuracy of operation.

Keeps accurate records of information regarding meters tested, repaired, and materials used.

Does routine meter changes at customer locations.

Reads large power meters at customer locations.

Performs field testing on metering installations; including testing potential transformers, meters and wiring circuits.

Works with supervisor in keeping track of meter inventory.

Ability to meet with customers to discuss electrical usage concerns.

Keeps meter shop clean and in good order.

Perform maintenance, repair and improvements of city owned Traffic Signals.

Assist with design and construction of new signalized intersections.

Responsible for keeping records associated with traffic signal operations, maintenance and testing.

Fiber optic cable installation, splicing and termination.

Assisting with various city special events, (example: Light up Siloam Springs, annual Dogwood festival).

Assist in operating and maintaining city tornado siren system.

Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

May be required to have a share in the regular electric department stand-by rotation.

Will be required to work after normal working hours in case of power outages.
