It's Mosquito Season!

As you have probably noticed, there has been an increase in the number of mosquitoes recently due to a variety of factors, including the warmer weather and high tides. The County Vector Control Program (VCP) is responsible for mosquito abatement, and they have scheduled aerial applications throughout the year to address these issues.

The next aerial application is scheduled for today, Wednesday, August 31st, and tomorrow, Thursday, September 1st. You might see the helicopters spraying both the San Elijo and San Dieguito lagoons. Another aerial larvicide application is scheduled for September 21st and September 22nd, if necessary.

The County uses helicopters to drop batches of solid, granular larvicide on hard-to-reach rivers, streams, ponds and other waterways roughly once a month from April through October to help stop mosquitoes from potentially spreading disease like West Nile virus. The larvicide does not hurt people or pets but kills mosquito larvae before they can grow into biting mosquitoes.

Getting rid of mosquito-breeding sites is critical to lowering the number of mosquitoes in our community. Residents should help protect themselves from mosquitoes in and around their homes by finding and dumping out standing water to keep the pests from breeding. A mosquito only needs a tiny bottle cap-size pool of water to lay up to 300 eggs, which is why removing standing water is critical.

Residents can also protect themselves from mosquito-borne illnesses by wearing long sleeves and pants or use insect repellent when outdoors. Use insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon, eucalyptus, or IR3535. Make sure screens on windows and doors are in good condition and secured to keep insects out.

Excessive Heat Wave Advisory

Southern California is heading into a high-impact and long-duration heat wave this week, lasting into next week. This heat wave will bring high or even very high heat risk with temperatures 10 to 20 degrees above average.

High temperatures will impact the beaches and the coast for much of this week and weekend. High temperatures in the upper 80s to mid-90s are expected, with low temperatures only dropping into the mid-70s overnight. Higher humidity will make it feel warmer than the actual air temperature. The hottest temperatures at the coast look to occur over Labor Day weekend, with an overall high heat risk expected.

There will be a high risk for heat-related illnesses, especially with extended outdoor exposure. Remember to drink plenty of fluids, seek shade or air conditioning when possible, and ensure your pets have plenty of water and shade.

“Cool Zone” sites, located throughout the County, help older adults and others keep cool and save energy costs. Click here to locate the Cool Zone site nearest you.

La Colonia Park Pickleball Court Temporary Closure

The pickleball court at La Colonia Park is temporarily closed so that the playing surface can be expanded. The net was removed last week and should be reinstalled on Friday, September 2nd. This is slightly later than reported last week due to unforeseen circumstances including a substantial amount of tree roots that needed to be removed. During the closure of the court, the concrete surface will be expanded to the south by approximately 10 feet. The concrete is scheduled to be poured tomorrow, September 1st, and then the net will be reinstalled on Friday, September 2nd, in its previous location. Please note that the concrete will need sufficient time to cure so it will be protected through the weekend. The City will be repainting the court and relocating the net to be centered to the court at a future date.
