Threadz Teen Clothes Closets, a program of Tempe Community Council, proudly opened a third set of doors—this time to serve Ahwatukee teens—and announced they would remain open after school every Thursday for the remainder of the school year. Plans are in motion to gradually open for the public with two Open House events on Nov. 3 and Nov. 9.

The new location provided Mountain Pointe High School students a first look at the classroom-turned-shop during their soft opening last Thursday. The mood in the hall was anticipatory as students lined up outside the door. Inside, rounded racks of new and gently used teen-friendly clothing created a meandering path to the back of the room, where a full-sized, private dressing area awaited. Complete with shelves holding a wide variety of school supplies, hoodies and shoes, bins with purses, cosmetic bags, shampoo, conditioner, and deodorant, and coupled with trendy décor, the shop lived up to its reputation of providing a space where teens can express themselves through accessible fashion and obtain the supplies needed for academic success. All inventory is donated directly to the program or purchased through grants and individual contributions.

Providing various essential resources and a supportive environment has enabled Threadz Clothes Closets to become a haven for students on Tempe High and Marcos de Niza campuses--the goal is to provide this offering at Mountain Pointe. Mountain Pointe, geographically located in Phoenix/Ahwatukee, is a Tempe Union High School District school. All middle and high school students with a valid ID from Tempe Union High School District, Kyrene School District, and Tempe Elementary School District can shop for FREE during open hours at any of these locations.

On Nov. 3, Threadz will host an open house during the 8th Grade Showcase, an event for surrounding middle schools to visit Mountain Pointe and see what the school offers for academics, athletics, and more. The following week, on Nov. 9, they will hold another open house during Parent-Teacher Conferences, before returning to their regularly scheduled Thursdays.

“Threadz provides every teen, regardless of their life circumstances, with the clothing, personal care products, and school supplies they need to feel comfortable and confident. This increases the likelihood of their staying in school. There is nothing more satisfying than watching a teen leave Threadz with a shopping bag in their hand and a smile on their face.” stated Ann-Lynn DiDomenico, Chief Program Officer and Threadz Program Manager.
