Tempe, AZ - New rules at parks citywide will ensure that amenities like ramadas and playground equipment can be enjoyed by all and that parks continue to be safe, welcoming spaces.

After a pilot program in September, the city updated its parks ordinance to implement the new rules at all 52 parks beginning this month.

The new rules prohibit:

Improperly using park amenities, playground equipment or ramadas, including occupying a ramada for more than four hours a day without a reservation

Blocking access to any park amenity, sidewalk or ramada

Causing damage to landscaping

Using or possessing illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia such as hypodermic needles within parks and preserves

The new rules are designed to enhance the community experience in parks. Tempe believes parks are spaces where communities are built, and that clean and safe spaces are imperative to promoting healthy communities. In making these changes, Tempe emphasizes that parks are community spaces open to all.

The updated park ordinance, approved by the Tempe City Council on Nov. 3, can be found here.

Tempe’s park and preserve system is a valued community asset and the city is continually working to enhance the visitor experience.

Refresh Tempe is an initiative to add and maintain Tempe amenities and infrastructure, such as inclusive playgrounds, dog parks, community centers, pools and more. The city is also embarking on an equity study to analyze, assess and act on equity within our parks and recreation spaces and programs.
