Recapping a Busy Year!

Friends!

I can’t believe we have reached the end of 2022! Time has just flown by since I took office in early July. I want to take a moment to recap what I’ve achieved in this short amount of time:

Holding monthly community meetings with Tempe residents and community leaders
Publishing a monthly newsletter with thousands of subscribers
Completing multiple 24-hour shift tours with the Tempe Police Department and Tempe Fire and Medical Rescue
Visiting all Tempe PRE sites
Participating in more than 120 meetings with residents, local businesses, and community groups

My goal by taking part in in these activities has been to learn, educate, and grow as an elected official. Each opportunity to interact with City of Tempe stakeholders is an opportunity I cherish. Both City of Tempe residents and City of Tempe staff have continuously impressed me. We live in a very special place where people care about one another. Let’s always remember that. Let’s cooperate and work together to continuously progress.

The door to my office in Tempe City Hall is always open. Please feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns at 480-350-8748 or email me at [email protected].

With love,
Berdetta

Recapping our last "Breakfast with Berdetta"!

On Saturday Dec. 3, 2022, we held our third “Breakfast with Berdetta” community gathering. At this event, nearly 70 Tempe residents came together at the Tempe Public Library to hear from City of Tempe staff including leaders from the Tempe Police Department, Tempe Fire and Medical Rescue, CARE 7, and the Tempe HOPE Outreach Team.

We held a productive dialogue where residents asked questions, made suggestions, and learned more about what each of these departments seek to do to improve the lives of Tempeans. Meetings such as these remind me why Tempe is the best city in America and why our residents are the most engaged in the nation.

Please stay tuned for information on our next "Breakfast with Berdetta," which will take place in late January.

Taking Care of Critters in Tempe

Did you know that Tempe now has an Office of Animal Welfare?

In July 2022, Kristin Gwinn was hired as the City of Tempe’s first Animal Welfare Coordinator. Kristin has over 30 years of professional animal experience, including veterinary medicine, animal training and behavior, wildlife rehabilitation, dog and cat rescue, and education.

The Animal Welfare Office oversees the City’s successful Community Cat Management Program which provides funding and support for those managing Tempe’s feral cat colonies. In 2022, the program is on track to provide Trap-Neuter-Return ("TNR") surgeries for more than 800 cats and has pulled nearly 100 stray kittens off the street and placed them with local rescues for adoption.

In the new year, the Animal Welfare Office will be doubling their TNR efforts, working with the HOPE Team to assist with homeless pets belonging to our unsheltered population, and serving as a resource for city residents and staff on a variety of animal related issues.

Kristin and the Animal Welfare Office can be reached at [email protected] or by calling 480-858-PETS (7387).

Netta Cheta's on Mill

Despite opening less than a year ago, Netta Cheta’s, 3224 S. Mill Ave., has quickly become a beloved brunch spot for Tempe residents. With nearly 100 five-star reviews, customers rave about the egg-based dishes such as their omelets, benedicts, and cast-iron skillets. Adrian & Ronetta Yracheta’s restaurant serves breakfast and lunch all day from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., seven days a week. Netta Cheta’s also offers prospective patrons a large banquet space ready to host special events of all sizes.
