Mayor Corey Woods appointed to housing leadership role through U.S. Conference of Mayors Woods to serve as Vice Chair of the Community Development and Housing Standing Committee

- Mayor Corey Woods is taking on a national leadership role to further advance community development and housing strategies through the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Woods, a longtime affordable housing advocate, has been appointed Vice Chair of the Community Development and Housing Standing Committee. In this role, Woods is tasked with helping develop a proactive, strategic agenda to guide national policy making.

“I am pleased to appoint Mayor Woods as Vice Chair of the Conference’s Community Development and Housing Standing Committee,” said U.S. Conference of Mayors President Miami Mayor Francis Suarez. “I am confident that his leadership and the work he is doing in Tempe to accelerate the growth of affordable and workforce housing will help fellow mayors across the country continue to create vibrant communities.”

Woods is grateful for the opportunity to help guide national housing policy.

“I am truly humbled to step into a leadership role within the United States Conference of Mayors as Vice Chair of the Community Development and Housing Standing Committee,” Woods said. “This will be a great opportunity to work with other mayors to influence national policies that will increase affordable and workforce housing opportunities throughout our country.”

The new national appointment comes on the heels of another housing leadership role for Woods.

The Mayor was recently appointed to the bipartisan Housing Supply Study Committee created by the Arizona Legislature. Woods joins other elected officials as well as government, industry and nonprofit leaders in exploring the state’s housing shortage, soliciting public input and identifying solutions.

Under the Mayor’s leadership and with full approval from the Tempe City Council, Tempe adopted the Hometown for All initiative in 2021 to accelerate the growth of affordable and workforce housing in Tempe. The initiative creates a dedicated funding stream to support more affordable housing and provides new guidelines for voluntary contributions to increase housing opportunities.

In March, Woods was named Advocate of the Year by the Arizona Housing Coalition for his work advocating for and expanding affordable housing.
