Tempe, AZ – Help keep Tempe buildings safe for everyone. We're looking for engineering, electrical and plumbing professionals to serve on Tempe's Technical Code Advisory Board of Appeals.

The board has two upcoming openings for people with expert knowledge:

-A mechanical engineer, an International Code Council (ICC) certified commercial mechanical inspector, an ICC certified mechanical plans examiner, an ICC certified commercial plumbing inspector, or an ICC certified plumbing plans examiner.

-An electrical engineer registered in Arizona, an ICC certified commercial electrical inspector, or an ICC certified electrical plans inspector.

The qualified team of nine members on the Technical Code Advisory Board of Appeals is responsible for collaborating to review, write amendments, and implement and disseminate the technical code when the new code cycle needs to be adopted. This process occurs every six years. This process will commence again in 2024 with implementation around early 2025.

Other board duties include the following:

-Hearing and deciding appeals of orders, decisions or determinations made by the building official relative to the application and interpretation of Tempe building regulations and technical codes

-Granting variances to the technical provisions of the technical codes when it can be established that a manifest injustice would be done

-Approving the use of the alternate materials or methods of construction, provided the alternate materials or method is, for the purpose intended, at least the equivalent of that prescribed by the technical codes in suitability, strength, effectiveness, fire resistance, durability, safety and sanitation

If appointed by the Mayor and City Council at their regular meeting on Dec. 15, the member’s term of office would begin on Jan. 1, 2023, and expire on Dec. 31, 2025.  The member would be eligible to serve an additional three-year term if reappointed in Dec. 2025.
