Take the water use calculator quiz

Want to know if your water is being used efficiently in your home? The Water Use Calculator from the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association (AMWUA) uses your answers to a few simple questions to estimate how much water an individual needs each month to be efficient. Residents can use this estimate to set monthly water usage goals for the home. To see how the water use calculator’s suggestions compare to the actual home water use, visit the WaterSmart Customer Portal to view hourly, daily and monthly water usage charts. 

January WHENTOWATER Report

The following are general guidelines for routine watering frequency for established landscapes for the month of January. New plants require more water until they become established. Monitor plants for signs of stress, especially during the summer months. Visit Watering by the Numbers for detailed, step-by-step instructions regarding how much and how often to water. 

Lawns 
Summer grass (Bermuda) - once every 30 days 
Over seeded cool season grass - once every ten to 14 days 

Trees and shrubs on same valve 
Desert adapted - once every 35 days 
High water use - once every 18 days 

Trees 
Desert adapted - once every 45 days 
High water use - once every 21 days 

Shrubs, groundcovers and vines 
Desert adapted - once every 30 days 
High water use - once every 14 days 

Cacti and succulents - if needed 
Annuals and vegetable - once every ten days 

Wildflowers 
Once every fifteen days 

These recommendations are general guidelines and will need to be modified for specific site conditions. Input information about the irrigation system into the online, interactive watering guide to identify exact irrigation run times (i.e., how long to run the water each time you water).

Water Wise plant of the month

Desert Lavender (Hyptis emoryi) has fragrant foliage and attracts hummingbirds. 

- Provides color in the spring

- Offers a moderate growth rate 

- Thrives in full or reflected sunlight

- Found in Southwestern deserts

- Requires low watering

- Contains no thorns 

- Grows up to 6 feet in height and 4 feet in width when mature

- Produces no allergens 

ASU Fall Housing Fair Nov. 2nd
Tempe’s water conservation staff participated in the 2022 ASU Fall Housing Fair and engaged with almost 100 individuals to raise awareness of water conservation and water resources. Students and staff also had a chance to win promotional materials by correctly answering questions on water conservation best practices and knowing facts about water resources.
