Rename a park, U.S. 60 update, Tardeada time and haunted tours!
Help rename some Tempe parks and streets
Several Tempe parks and streets are being renamed at the City Council’s direction after historical research determined that their namesakes were documented members of a local Ku Klux Klan chapter in the 1920s. Read more about this at tempe.gov/renaming.
Through Oct. 17, community members may provide their suggested new names for the locations via a survey at tempe.gov/forum. The Parks and Streets Renaming Ad Hoc Committee will consider the suggestions and make recommendations to Tempe City Council after a series of open meetings.
The City Council has the authority to name and rename city-owned locations. The committee’s recommendations will be brought to the City Council for their consideration and a future vote.
Final work to restore water transmission line near U.S. 60 begins Sunday
Crews will soon begin the final work needed to restore the water transmission line that burst and flooded the U.S. 60 in May. This will require an approximate three-week closing of the eastbound U.S. 60 ramp to the southbound Loop 101 and the eastbound U.S. 60 off-ramp at McClintock Drive.
Investing in Your Streets: Alameda Drive
Alameda Drive is transforming into a premier bicycle and pedestrian corridor, linking Tempe to Phoenix and eventually Mesa. Construction is currently underway and the new and improved streetscape is scheduled to open in early 2023.

Time for things that go bump in the night
Four Peaks has seen its share of tragedy, from train wrecks just outside the building to actual deaths within it. Staff has experienced all kinds of unexplained phenomena, too. Hear the eerie tales on these seasonal tours. Haunted Brewery Tours happen Mondays through Wednesdays until Nov 2. Tickets are $30 and include a tour, a pitcher of Pumpkin Porter and a commemorative T-shirt.
Negotiations begin to bring new life to Danelle Plaza
A beloved Tempe shopping center could get a new life while maintaining its longtime local identity through a redevelopment opportunity now moving forward. Staff will begin negotiations with a redevelopment team that wants to remake Danelle Plaza, located at Mill and Southern avenues.
First opened in 1963, dozens of restaurants, bars and retail shops have been located in the plaza, including music venues and a skateboard park.
The goal of this possible redevelopment is to maintain the plaza’s iconic local identity and businesses like Yucca Tap Room, while enlivening it with affordable and workforce housing, new community space and other new uses.
