Drought Update

The on-going drought on the Colorado River is worsening. Tempe, along with many valley cities, recognizes the situation is serious and continues to plan strategically for a future with less Colorado River water. In May, conditions on the Colorado River led Municipal Utilities to implement Stage 0 (Watch) of Tempe’s Drought Preparedness Plan.

Strategies from Stage 0 (Watch) that were implemented include:
-    Increase frequency of routine updates regarding drought status.
-    Monitor forecasts for watersheds that provide Tempe’s surface water supplies.
-    Increase public messaging of drought status (www.tempe.gov/water).
-    Increase recharge of available supplies for future use.
-    Reduce groundwater pumping.
-    Initiate use of reclaimed water.
As the shortage on the Colorado River continues, Tempe may take additional actions described in the drought preparedness plan. At this point, there are no requests for actions by customers other than to take advantage of the many ways your business can conserve water through the Water Conservation Program.
