EXPECT TO SEE SMOKE TOMORROW FROM SWEETWATER WETLANDS CONTROLLED BURN - Tucson Water and the Tucson Fire Department (TFD) will conduct the annual Sweetwater Wetlands controlled burn tomorrow, Nov. 3, starting at 8 a.m. The area will be completely closed to the public and will reopen on Friday, Nov. 4. The yearly burn began in 1999 as an important part of Tucson Water’s Mosquito Abatement Program, and it provides essential training for TFD firefighters who are also specially trained in wildland firefighting. Several representatives of the Washington Army National Guard will partner with TFD to participate in the training. This year, the burn will take place in two of the four basins and is being held early enough so that habitat can regenerate and be available during the winter migratory bird season. In past years, all four ponds were burned in the same day. Going forward, after consulting with wildlife management professionals and other stakeholders, only two of the four ponds will rotate being burned each year.

A public hearing will be held to gather input regarding ward redistricting. That hearing is scheduled for tomorrow, Nov. 3, at 5:30 p.m., in the Mayor and Council Chambers, 255 W. Alameda St. The preliminary redistricting plan will be on display at the public hearing and is available for public inspection during normal business hours at the City Clerk’s Office, 255 W. Alameda St., 9th floor. The plan also can be reviewed online at the link below. Comments and suggestions may be submitted to the Redistricting Advisory Committee, c/o City Clerk, P.O. Box 27210, Tucson, AZ 85726-7210, emailed to [email protected] or hand-delivered to the City Clerk’s Office, at the location above, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekdays.
