Fourth Avenue Street Fair This Weekend - The Fourth Avenue Winter Street Fair runs tomorrow, Dec. 9, through Sunday, Dec. 11. More information, times, transit maps, and shuttle information are available at the links below. Fourth Avenue is now closed south of University Boulevard to Eighth Street, with the exception of Sixth Street. Additional side street closures include Fourth Street, Fifth Street, and Seventh Street between Third Avenue and Fifth Avenue, and Eighth Street from Hoff Avenue to Herbert Avenue. All roadways are scheduled to reopen by approximately 10 p.m. Sunday.

Free Block Party This Weekend - The City’s new 29th Street Thrive Zone will hold a free block party Saturday, Dec. 10, to celebrate the community and kickoff the new initiative. The neighborhood gathering will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Freedom Park, 5000 E. 29th St. There will be food trucks, live music, raffle prizes, games and jumping castles, free family portraits, a photo contest exhibition, and resource information. Tucson's Mayor and Council directed Housing and Community Development (HCD) to create a new Thrive zone similar to the Thrive in the 05. Thrive in the 05 is a four-year-old collaboration between the City of Tucson; Arizona State University's Office of Community Health, Engagement, and Resiliency; Pima Community College Downtown campus; residents; business owners; and community organizations in the 85705 ZIP code area of Tucson. Thrive in the 05 has resulted in increased community engagement and nine projects that will enhance the neighborhoods in the area.

HHW/Document Shredding Event This Weekend - The City of Tucson's Environmental and General Services Department (EGSD) is hosting its monthly Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Event this Saturday, Dec. 10, from 8 a.m. to noon, at Hi Corbett Field, 700 S. Randolph Way. City residents can drop off HHW, electronic waste, paper documents for shredding (limit 3 boxes), and glass bottles and jars at no charge. Unknown chemicals will not be accepted. The event is free for City of Tucson residents with proof of address. Residents from Marana, Oro Valley, Sahuarita, and unincorporated Pima County will be charged a $10 fee to drop off materials. EGSD hosts HHW collection events on the second Saturday of every month in different areas across Tucson. Follow the links below for more information.

Tucson Parks And Recreation Releases Winter And Spring Leisure Class Lineup - Winter and spring leisure classes are viewable online now, and registration will open on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 8 a.m. for City residents and 10 a.m. for non-City residents at the registration link below. Classes offered range from beginning ballet, pottery, jewelry making, photography, and more. There will be various options for both youth and adult participants. Make sure to register early to secure your spot. If you have any questions, call Registration Services at (520) 791-4877.

Public Safety Communications Department Grand Opening - The City of Tucson Public Safety Communications Department (PSCD) held a grand opening event last Friday, Dec. 2. The center, which handles nearly a million 911 calls each year for the greater Tucson area, was consolidated in 2017 to reduce call transfers and wait times while providing unified responses to the community. The newly completed remodel encompasses the consolidated vision with a restored atmosphere and includes an expanded call-taking and dispatching floor, a designated training center, a redesign of the administration wing, a department fitness center, and even a sensory room to help employees reset after a tough call. Beautiful artwork can be found throughout the center, depicting both the department’s unique identity and the relationship with partner agencies.
