Tucson Police Department Awarded A State Dui Training And Enforcement Grant - The Tucson Police Department (TPD) recently announced it received a $140,000 grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). TPD's Impaired Driver Enforcement Unit was awarded the grant from the Oversight Council on Driving or Operating Under the Influence Abatement under the direction of GOHS Director Alberto Gutier. The grant will provide overtime expenses to enhance DUI enforcement efforts throughout the City of Tucson. The additional officers on the roadway will participate in high-visibility DUI deployments and saturation patrols, emphasizing holidays and weekend nights. The funding also will help members of the Impaired Driver Enforcement Unit in educating members of the department with a mentorship program. During this mentorship, officers will ride with members of the unit to become more proficient in investigating impaired drivers. The goal of these deployments and saturation patrols is to increase the awareness of motorists regarding the dangers of impaired driving, deter those who may be impaired from driving, and investigate DUI offenses to reduce the number of impaired drivers on the road. Additionally, TPD will continue to join with other participating law enforcement agencies with weekend DUI deployments and saturation patrols as part of the Southern Arizona DUI Task Force for the remainder of 2022.
