Plan Tucson Open House January 19

What do you want for Tucson? Your vision for the future of our community is needed as we update Plan Tucson, the City of Tucson General & Sustainability Plan (2013).  

Over the coming years, community members will have the opportunity to develop a 20-year plan for Tucson, reflecting our shared goals and diverse aspirations. The goals and policies spelled out in the next Plan Tucson will be used to guide the City’s investments, programs, policies, and land-use decisions over the next two decades.

During the first phase of community outreach in Spring 2023, Tucson residents will be asked to share their priorities and vision for the future of our City. This is an opportunity for the community to learn about the City’s recent efforts, assess our needs and challenges, and guide Tucson’s long-term direction.

Plan Tucson will be on the ballot for voter approval in November 2025.

We invite you to attend our first Plan Tucson Open House event. Please help spread the information to the Tucson community.

Infill Incentive District updated and renewed by Mayor and Council

On December 20, 2022, Mayor and Council unanimously approved an amendment to the Unified Development Code to update and extend the Infill Incentive District (IID) beyond its sunset date of January 31, 2023.

With a focus on incentivizing affordable housing development and continued encouragement of sustainable infill development, pedestrian-friendly and transit-oriented neighborhoods, and protecting historic and cultural resources, the IID updates include changes to:

- Allow residential development in industrial zones

- Incentivize affordable housing

- Update and clarify design standards for Downtown Links / Stone Ave Corridor

- Integrate the Individual Parking Plan (IPP) into the IID

- Extend the IID boundary along portions of:

W Congress St in Menlo Park

N Stone Ave, and N Main Ave in Dunbar Spring

N 13th Ave in Barrio Blue Moon

- Make minor text clarifications

- Remove the sunset date

A proposal to expand the IID to include the western portion of the former Nearmont Landfill was removed from the update to allow for the Menlo Park Neighborhood Plan to be completed, which will document community priorities and goals for the future use of the site.

Special Exception Process for marijuana dispensaries approved by Mayor and Council

On December 20, 2022, Mayor and Council voted 6-1 to approve an amendment to the Unified Development Code to add a Mayor and Council Special Exception land use procedure for marijuana dispensaries wishing to locate within the City. This process applies to both medical and adult-use dispensaries, as well as relocations or certain expansions of existing dispensaries.

This decision follows nine months of stakeholder and public engagement, as well as research and review of other AZ jurisdiction policies.

The City of Tucson Planning and Development Services Department is currently recruiting as we continue to grow our customer-centric team and help shape the future of Tucson.

Building Inspector I: The trainee program is a structured program typically lasting for two years and involves instruction plus on-the-job training and work performance. Appropriate progress and successful completion of the training program is required for continuation in this classification. Upon successful completion of the described training program and acquiring the required licenses and certifications, trainees will be eligible for appointment as Building Inspector II.
