Putting Stormwater to Work!

As the third-fastest-warming city in the U.S., Tucson is strategically finding solutions to the challenges of climate change. Storm to Shade (S2S) is the City of Tucson’s green stormwater infrastructure program, unanimously approved by Mayor and Council in 2019. Tucson Water customers within City limits support S2S via a dedicated fee on their utility statement. S2S builds and maintains green stormwater infrastructure throughout the City that directs stormwater from streets, parking lots, and rooftops into landscaped areas where it infiltrates the soil to support native vegetation.

Enter to Win a Smart Irrigation Controller

Fact: The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that as much as 50% of water in the landscape is wasted due to inefficiencies in irrigation methods and systems. Smart controllers and add-ons can maximize irrigation efficiency automatically by determining the watering needs of your landscape.

If your irrigation system has an existing clock-timer, you may be able to connect a rain sensor as an add-on, creating a smart irrigation controller. Rain sensors measure rain levels and if enough has fallen, the sensor communicates with your irrigation controller and tells it to skip the next cycle - a useful and economic option.

Ready for a new smart irrigation controller? Look for WaterSense-labeled controllers that meet water efficiency and performance specifications:

A weather-based irrigation controller customizes watering times based on local weather and landscape conditions. Plants get water when they need it.

A soil moisture-based irrigation controller directly measures ground soil moisture and tailors the irrigation schedule to meet landscape water needs. This helps reduce water waste and aids in plant health.

“Why is my water pressure low—or high?”

Water pressure can vary greatly from one area of the water system to another, even from house to house. Here are six factors that may affect your home's water pressure:

- Your home’s elevation relative to the reservoir or booster station serving your area
- An area water outage
- A leak in your home or on your property
- A home water treatment system that needs maintenance
- A malfunctioning shut-off valve to the house
- A pressure regulating valve (PRV) that needs adjustment or replacement

Be a Neat Neighbor: Cut Down Weeds

Monsoon rains mean weeds are popping up all over. Be a neat neighbor and cut down out-of-control weeds and grasses to below 6” on your property, in alleys, and on easements. Ensure safe and easy property access for utility workers and service providers!
