WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Gregory W. Meeks (NY-05) recognizes the 44 lives lost due to Superstorm Sandy 10 years ago and the progress New York has made to rebuild its infrastructure to endure climate change. Rep. Meeks issued the following statement:

“It is important for us to remember the lives lost due to Superstorm Sandy and the destruction that it brought to our state, especially in the Rockaways. New York has done a great deal to enhance the infrastructure through resiliency projects that combat the ongoing climate crisis.

“The New York Congressional Delegation worked together to secure more than $1 billion in federal funding for hurricane and storm risk reduction projects in the state and my district. These initiatives are transforming our infrastructure and communities to mitigate the damage that a coastal storm or any other natural disaster could have on our neighborhoods.

“While we have made significant progress in rebuilding and protecting, there is still more work to be done. I look forward to continuing to work with partners across all levels of government to ensure an equitable investment in our efforts to prevent natural hazards from devastating the lives of future generations of New Yorkers.”
