WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Gregory W. Meeks (NY-05) issued the following statement on House Democratic Leadership for the upcoming Congress:
“The time is now for the next generation of House Democratic leadership. I am proud of the individuals that we’ve elected to lead our Caucus because they have demonstrated their commitment to serve the American people.
“Congressman Hakeem Jeffries is the visionary leader that this moment calls for. His election to serve as Democratic Leader is cause for celebration not only because he is the first Black person to hold this position, but because he worked to gain the confidence of his peers across generational, ideological, and geographical divides to ensure House Democrats continue to deliver for the people.
“Additionally, Rep. Katherine Clark serving as the next Democratic Whip, Rep. Pete Aguilar as Democratic Caucus Chair, and Rep. Ted Lieu as Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus have the expertise and talent to advance the House Democratic agenda to combat inflation, defend democracy, protect reproductive freedom and improve public safety across our country.
“We have passed the baton to the next cohort of Democratic leaders who reflect the diversity of our country and can positively shape our nation. I look forward to supporting the leadership team as we work to be the voice and advocate for the issues most important to Americans in the 118th Congress.”
