WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) announced that the Center for Effective Lawmaking (CEL) named him the most effective Republican Senator for the 117th Congress:

“Despite the partisanship that often gripped this chamber last Congress, we managed to actually accomplish quite a bit on behalf of the American people,” said Sen. Cornyn. “I’m hopeful that we will embrace this new era of divided government to provide the opportunity to govern in a more responsible way and rise to the challenge that the voters in the midterm elections gave us.”

The Center released the following statement congratulating Sen. Cornyn on this honor:

“Senator Cornyn was the most effective Republican lawmaker in the Senate in the 117th Congress, and the second-most effective lawmaker in the Senate overall,” said Alan E. Wiseman, Co-Director of the Center for Effective Lawmaking. “The fact that he was so successful at advancing his legislative agenda, despite not serving as a committee or subcommittee chair, combined with his past record of lawmaking effectiveness, point to his abilities to navigate the legislative process both as a majority and minority party member.”

Background:

The CEL scores lawmakers based on the combination of 15 metrics regarding the bills each member of Congress sponsors, how far they move through the lawmaking process, and how substantial their policy proposals are. Despite being in the minority, he was also ranked the most effective lawmaker by CEL on trade policy and issues pertaining to law, crime, and family.
