You are invited to meet with members and friends of the Des Moines Chapter, Iowa Council of the United Blind (ICUB), Monday evening, August 8, 2022, at the Department for the Blind building, 524 Fourth St. The doors to the Assembly Room will open at 5:00 p.m., so come mix and mingle prior to our meeting. The meeting will begin with call to order promptly at 5:30 p.m.
This month our speaker will be Director Emily Wharton with the Iowa Department for the Blind. (IDB). Director Wharton will be speaking about the recent decision by the Department of Education to end their materials contract with the Iowa Department for the Blind.
The materials contract, worth $575,000, allowed for the Education Department to be billed for Iowa students who are blind and low vision being provided braille and other accessible educational materials.
Being able to read and write has a direct relationship with an individual's well-being, quality of life and future. Director Wharton will discuss the importance of braille for literacy and the impact this change will have for our blind students.
Please join us on Monday night.
