Many New Year’s resolutions are focused on improving personal appearance; however, the fastest and most impactful enhancement a person can make is on their smile, and a new LED light treatment for teeth whitening makes it even easier to get pristine pearly whites. Dr. Ana Paula Gomes with Elmwood Dental Group LLC in West Hartford believes patients will be eager to take advantage of the latest technology.

“We frequently have patients express frustration about the coloring of their teeth,” explains Dr. Gomes. “Some will even share how diligent they are with their oral care routine.”

Dr. Gomes notes there are numerous types of teeth stains; some are genetic, environmental or pharmacological in nature, but most discolored teeth come naturally from the foods and drinks we consume. The most common are surface stains on the enamel or beneath the enamel in the dentin. Surface stains are caused by foods, beverages and lifestyle behaviors, like smoking. Over time, the surface stains may penetrate the enamel and darken the overall appearance of the tooth.

There are several products that alter the color of teeth including:

Drinks and Foods Containing Tannic Acid: Tannic acid is found in a number of plants and can darken teeth depending on the level of tannins. It is known to be in coffee, tea, and dark colored sodas. Additionally, tannic acid is found in berries, including wine, along with barley, mint, basil, rosemary and more.

Sauces: The acid found in sauces can stain teeth. Soy sauces contain a brown pigment called melanoidin, that can stain. Tomato sauces have an acid that can break down the enamel, weakening and darkening the color.

“Over the counter whitening toothpastes and kits often only treat the surface enamel. Professional products include hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide that breaks apart the carbon bonds that create yellow stains. Once the bonds are broken, they no longer reflect a yellow color,” said Dr. Gomes.

The in-office GLO Professional Whitening treatment offers a brighter white smile, up to 12 shades whiter in under an hour, without sensitivity. It features a universally-sized mouthpiece that combines optimal warming heat and safe LED light to accelerate specially formulated 30% hydrogen peroxide whitening gel. Patients get lasting results without the need for impressions or trays.

The gentle, controlled heat of the closed-system mouthpiece prevents dehydration of the teeth, a common cause of sensitivity. In addition, the whitening gel formula is specially formulated with potassium nitrate which acts as a protective barrier and desensitizing agent.  Also available in 24% HP for younger patients and those prone to sensitivity.

“This innovative tooth whitening technology offers an effective, enjoyable, and pain-free whitening experience,” said Dr. Gomes.

To encourage existing patients to share the gift of sparkling smiles with friends and family members, Elmwood Dental Group is giving them the chance to win a Glo treatment. Patients who participate in the practice’s Refer-a-Friend program from today through March 31, 2020 will receive entries to win an in-office professional teeth whitening treatment and a Diamond Clean Professional Sonicare electric toothbrush. Each patient referral is worth three entries in the contest for prizes valued at $750. Additionally, the new patient will also receive one entry in the drawing. The winners will both be notified on April 1st.

Gomes notes a comprehensive exam is required to identify any decay prior to a tooth whitening treatment and the treatment is more effective after a professional cleaning.

“Teeth that are beautifully white help you look younger, cleaner, and fresher. Many patients are shocked at the difference in their smile, and even in how they are perceived professionally and personally, so we wanted to give one of our valued patients that gift,” said Dr. Gomes.

Since a person’s smile is often the very first thing that others notice, teeth whitening is the most popular cosmetic procedure offered by Elmwood Dental Group.
